When the Red Hat ladies club that I belong to and had a wine and chocolate party, I was very happy to be part of the group. We had several different types of wines, both red and white, ranging from very dry to very sweet. And we had an assortment of chocolates to choose from as well. It seemed to me that the dry wine was supposed to be paired with the dark chocolate, and the sweet wine was paired with the sweeter chocolates. I’ve never been a big fan of dark chocolate, and I’ve never been a big fan of dry wine, so I was being polite and sampling them all, but when we got to the white chocolate truffles and the dessert wines I was “all for it.” Our party’s organizer mentioned the www.wine.com website as a resource for people to learn more about wines. As for me, I’ve found that the tannins in red wine give me a headache, so I prefer the white wines. How about you?
So much fun
by Mary AnneThe red hatters group that I belong to has a wine and chocolate party every February. Our “queen” has done some research on which wines taste best with what chocolate. We start out with dry red wines and dark chocolate. She reads an article about how dark chocolate is made, where it is made, the history of it, and the health benefits. Then she talks about how it is best paired with certain red wines. Then we sample a little bit of both. Red wine gives me a headache, so I try not to drink very much of that.
Dark chocolate may be healthy for you to eat, but I have not become accustomed to the bitterness of it. I much prefer semi-sweet or milk chocolate. Of course we progress through the different types of chocolates and wines, until we reach my favorite – a sweet dessert wine with white chocolate. I understand that white chocolate is really made from almonds, and not the cocoa bean, but that’s Okay with me – I like it the best. By the end of the sampling party, several of the ladies are really glad that they live next door to the queen so they can walk home! As for me, I usually don’t drink more than a sip or two of the samples so I’m fine to drive home. I’m really just there for the chocolate!
Alcoholic drinks
by Mary AnneI have never been a big fan of alcoholic drinks. I usually order the “virgin” version of pina coladas or frozen strawberry daiquiris when we go out to dinner. However, it seems that every time I go to a social occasion, wine is being served. Red wine gives me a headache, so I tend to avoid that. When I was married to my first hubby, every wine we had was “dry” wine, which I don’t like at all, so I have pretty much avoided wines in general. I have been talked into trying some of the sweet white wines, and I have to say that some of them are pretty good. So now sometimes, when I go out to dinner at a restaurant, I might order a sweet white wine. I’m still learning which ones are sweet!
