English peas

by Mary Anne

Poor Paul Deen is getting a lot of snarky comments and flak recently over one of the recipes she has shared on line. Apparently the recipe is for “English peas” and basically the recipe is to take a pot, melt butter in the pot and add the peas to warm them up. A lot of people are being quite rude about the recipe because of its simplicity.

Well, first of all, let me say that I really like Paula Deen. And yes, that recipe does sound very easy. But, and this is an important but, it is different than the way I normally cook peas. I usually dump some peas in a microwave safe bowl, add a couple of splashes of water (I do not use canned peas, they are gross!) and then I cover the pan with a plate and nuke the peas for a couple of minutes, stir, nuke again.

Then I serve the peas with a slotted spoon and let each individual diner choose whether to add butter or not. Some people prefer their veggies very plain, not drowning in butter. And you know what, I don’t like cooking with butter because it burns too easily. Give Paula a break, guys!

I’ve noticed more and more interracial couples lately

by Mary Anne

When we lived in New England, we didn’t see very many people that were not Caucasian.  In fact, the state we lived in was 98% Caucasian, so it was a very rare incident to see someone who was of a different race!

It was very interesting, when we moved further south, to be around so many different people, so many different races and cultures.  I have found it to be very intellectually stimulating to help my family sort through their perceptions of what people of other races really are like!

I have been especially pleased to see so many incidences of interracial dating on the social scene.  It gives me hope that the unpleasantness of racism will eventually fade into just a bad memory.

I don’t understand why so many people get tattoos

by Mary Anne

As I go throughout my daily chores and errands, I see more and more people with tattoos!  I don’t understand the popularity of them at all.  Most of the people that I know that have had tattoos for a long time tell me that they wish that they had never gotten them.  The tattoos have faded, or run, and don’t look good anymore.  And a lot of times people have been discriminated against because of the tattoos that they have gotten.

Although I have seen a lot of really pretty, nice looking tattoos, I think that it is a mistake to get them.
