There is a networking meeting that I go to every week where a lot of businesses send a representative to the meeting to try to drum up business for their company. One thing that I’ve noticed is that a lot of the people that go to the meetings really don’t seem to be interested in helping each other out at all, which is a little bit disappointing because the entire concept of a networking meeting is to help each other, right?

What’s even more disappointing is the fact that some of the people that go to the meetings seem to claim that they will give you a free offer of some kind, in order to drum up business for themselves, but when you contact them and ask them to do it, they don’t even call you back! For example, there is a guy there that is a home insulation contractor that goes every week and will stand up and tell people that his company will perform a free energy audit and he hands out business cards with the web page address of his company, saying that they have a list of energy saving solutions on their web site, but when I tell him that I want to schedule an audit for my house he never gets back to me! I have even gone to his web page and filled out the request form and they don’t get back to me! Is that any way to run a business?

My kids know that I love trash to treasure crafts, so when they found a really interesting book about using empty soda bottles to make jewelry, they bought it for me for a great Mother’s Day gift. The name of the book is Magical Butterflies by Donna Manchester. She gives directions (and lots of pictures) on how to use empty plastic soda bottles, paint, wire and beads to make really gorgeous pins. I think that I already have most of the supplies to make some of them myself. I’m looking forward to giving it a try!

I have been interested to hear that the real estate market is starting to make a come-back for the seller. For my neighbors George and Marcia, who just listed their house for sale and got it under contract within the week, that is a good thing (although I will miss them like crazy!) For a lot of communities, that will be a good thing, an indication that the economy is starting to improve. But since the market has just started to improve, George and Marcia will have a their pick of the best possible obx homes for sale while the prices are still low!

I don’t know about you, but I get so tired of all of the junk mail that I get almost every day. What irritates me even more is all of the resources that are wasted producing and delivering the junk mail! When I get junk mail, sometimes I shred it, sometimes I just toss it in the trash. Sometimes, if it has a postage-paid return envelope in it I will tear up everything except the postage-paid return envelope, put it all inside the postage-paid return envelope and mail it back to the company that sent it to me.

I think that the US Post Office continues to raise the rates of stamps because they are not getting enough work (competing with Email, UPS, FedEx, etc) so this is a relatively painless way to give them more work at the expense of some other company! So, it is creating a little bit of job security for the Post Office workers, and some job security for the people who end up opening the envelope at the company it is going to! And, hopefully, their company recycles (most big companies do) so maybe the papers will get recycled there instead of filling up the junk yards in the local municipalities!

One of my favorite summertime childhood memories involves my parents holding a big crab feast at the cabin. They had a large stone barbecue fireplace that they would fire up and cook the crabs in a HUGE kettle. Then they spread newspapers over the cabin’s rustic dining table and put out potato chips, soda, and all of the boiled crabs you could eat! I never ate a lot of crabs, but I enjoyed the festive feeling of everyone else pounding and cracking the shells. Me, I loaded up on potato chips and soda and I was happy that my parents didn’t pay much attention to how much I wasn’t eating.

This past Christmas I gave a crock pot and a crock pot recipe magazine to my youngest son. He had asked for them, and I was pleased that he has taken an interest in cooking and was glad to give them to him! He let me borrow the magazine to look at the recipes, and I found one that I thought I’d try this weekend. The recipe calls for chicken thighs, orange marmalade, chicken broth, teriyaki sauce, broccoli and carrots.

I’m not quite sure when I’ll be going grocery shopping next, but I’ve got all of the ingredients on the shopping list – I think it sounds yummy, don’t you? My hubby might even eat it if I promise him that there will be no onions in it!

Our childhood summers were full of weekend vacations to the “cabin.” My parents had a summer cottage that was built like a rustic log cabin. It had a very small galley style kitchen, a very spartan bathroom with just a toilet, sink and shower stall, and a very large main room. That main room had four sets of bunk beds in it on one end of the room, a large fireplace at the other end of the room, and a rustic picnic table in it. There were two Adirondack style chairs hewed out of logs, and a rustic end table between them. There was a small loft that you could access through the use of a ladder, but generally speaking nobody went up there – it was dirty and full of spider webs.

Also on the property was a small recreational vehicle we called “the trailer.” It was pink, and it had a “real” living room, and two small bedrooms. Sometimes our parents would let us kids sleep in the trailer, sometimes we slept in the log cabin. I think that I preferred sleeping in the cabin because at least then I had my own bed. When we slept in the trailer I had to share a full size bed with my sister, and she was a restless sleeper that tossed and turned and kicked – a lot! Besides, when we slept in the trailer we could hear the parents talking and laughing and the noise made it impossible to fall asleep.

About twenty years ago my parents sold both the cabin, and the trailer. I really wished that they had let me buy the cabin from them. I liked the rustic feel and the relaxing frame of mind that I always felt when we were spending our summer days there. I don’t know if I will every get that same feeling anywhere else.

Recently I was looking for a place to keep some of my crafting supplies, and I went to a couple of stores that specialize in crafts. The stores had a lot of storage boxes that looked exactly like the tackle boxes that are used by fishermen (and fisherwomen – I don’t want to be sexist!) Although I did not end up buying a storage box for my craft supplies, I did end up buying a pink tackle-box and brought it home and transferred my personal tools (hammer, screwdriver, drill, etc) into that. I’m hoping that keeping my tools in a pink storage box might help to slow down the evaporative loss of my tools! And I think that I just might paint the handles of my tools pink, or wrap them with pink duct tape too! After all, REAL men don’t use pink tools, do they?

This is the time of year when I enjoy going to different nurseries in the area and see what beautiful window boxes they have on display and for sale. One of my favorite ways to make my own house more attractive is by lining the sides of the porch with flower boxes that are filled with blooming annuals.

My favorite way to do that is to take an empty windowbox and put some peastone or gravel in the bottom of it, then take the purchased annuals (still in their flower pots) and set them inside the window box. Pack them as tightly as possible, and then fill in around the pots with cedar mulch. My grandmother taught me this method when I went up to the farm to visit her in the summertime, and every time I prepare the window boxes I am reminded of the good times I had with my grandparents on the farm. This method is quick and easy to do, and by swapping out the annuals as they fade I can keep the porch looking pretty for a very long time.

More and more I have been wondering why is it that many fashion designers appear to hate women? I’m not referring to sexual preference in the romance department, I am talking about how ugly so many of the “new” fashions are. By now it should be fairly obvious and well known that horizontal stripes make a person look fatter than they really are. So why, then, are so many clothes that are for extra-large people available only in horizontal stripe patterns? For example, I enjoy going to different discount websites and take advantage of some of the savings that are offered there. Some of the products are great, and I’m glad that I have bought them. But some of them are mind-boggling ugly as – well I can’t really think of a good description of ugly that I can type on my blog and keep it family oriented!

For example, this morning I saw a “fantastic deal” on this jumpsuit. Hopefully the photograph that I’m including will show up. I just can’t imagine how anyone in their right mind would find this jumpsuit appealing, and yet according to the website, the jumpsuit is sold out. I’m wondering if it was sold out because a lot of men that have no taste whatsoever thought that they would buy this as a Mother’s Day gift for their wife, hoping that the wife would be thrilled to pieces. I pray that my hubby has enough sense to never buy anything like this for me! The horizontal stripes on this would make my legs look so fat, and the entire rest of my body too! What do you think about this? Would YOU like to wear something like this?

I don’t know about you, but I’ve never really paid a lot of attention to cluster mailboxes up until now. Seems to me that they have simply been very Spartan and utilitarian in design. After all, how can you really make a group of cluster mailboxes visually appealing? Well, today I saw some photographs of some cluster mailboxes that had been accessorized with finial tops and decorative pedestal wraps and they looked like they were part of a Victorian themed amusement park.

You may think that I’m being a little bit crazy here, and to be honest I would normally have to agree with you. But when I saw these mailboxes all gussied up like that my mind wandered to memories of wonderful vacations that I had spent in luxurious surroundings. Thoughts of Norman Rockwell settings of a time and a place when life was less frenzied, and more serene. Odd, I know, but there it is!

Have you every played with one of those silly little toys that looks like hundreds of dull nails in a perforated board of some kind, with a clear piece of glass or plastic on one side so you can make the nails go up and down in different shapes? I can’t remember when I bought this little toy for my now-adult son; I’m thinking it was probably when he was around ten or so. The toy is one of those things that people will play with for a short period of time and then pack it away forever. Well, yesterday I was sorting through the boxes of “junk” that my son cleaned out from his room. I wanted to see how much was actual “trash” and throw it away before moving the rest of the stuff down into the dark bowels of the house that we call “the basement.”

Well, I came across this silly little toy and for some crazy reason I pulled it aside and put it beside my computer keyboard. Every now and then it catches my attention (it is bright yellow) and I stop and play with it for a couple of minutes. Then I think to myself “what a complete waste of time this is” and put it back down. I can’t decide whether to give it to a thrift store like Goodwill, put it in “the basement” or throw it away. Somehow the pack rat in me keeps whispering in my ear that I should create a toy chest of odds and ends like this so that if and when company comes over with some kids that get bored I can pull it out and let them play with it. I wonder if they would think it was totally lame or if they would like it. What do you think?

Every home should have a fire resistant safe. Important papers, such as life insurance policies, vehicle titles, copies of wills, and stock certificates all need to be protected from the possibility of being lost if the unthinkable happens and the house catches fire. Sadly, there may even be times when one family member needs to lock up other types of valuables to protect them from dishonest friends, family, and even service personnel.

Back when I was a newlywed, my husband was taking classes to become a paramedic he brought home some special vials that had hearts on them, and a big heart shaped sticker to put on the refrigerator door. He told me that the idea was people that have medical conditions that emergency response personnel should know about where supposed to put information about that condition in the vials and put the vials in their freezer. The emergency response personnel were trained to look at the refrigerator door for that heart sticker and if they saw it that they would look in the freezer for that medical information. Part of the reasoning for this was that freezers are insulated and would resist burning in a house fire, so that would be a great place to keep something important.

From my point of view that’s a good idea, except that my refrigerator doors are always filled with magnets and shopping lists – I’m not sure that anyone would see a heart sticker on it! But that was back in the 1980′s and I don’t have any idea if the rescue people still hand those out or not. And my hubby at that time is now my ex-hubby and I’m not very inclined to call him up just to ask him about it, so I may never know.

I think that grandfather clocks are the comfort food of home furnishings. Every house that I’ve been in that I felt welcome and at ease in always had a grandfather clock in the living room. There simply seems to be a feeling of warmth and comfort that I associate with the grandfather clocks.

My mother has a very handsome grandfather clock in her living room. The clock is standing in a corner, lonely and unused. The clock has been there for about the past twelve years now, a silent sentinel, quietly standing watch over the room.

I have told her that I feel bad that this gorgeous clock is not being used. She told me that the ticking sound “bothered her” so she stopped using it. I asked her if I could have the clock for MY living room because I have always found the ticking sound of a clock to be a comfort. I think that one of my other sisters will probably end up with it as an inheritance piece instead – she has always favored them.

When we first looked at this house one of the things that I had mixed emotions about was the dropped surface of part of the kitchen counter island. Obviously it was intended to have a couple of counter stools tucked up to it, and I like that idea a lot, but I really would have preferred that it just have an overhang instead of a dropped level.

The house that I had lived in before I was lucky enough to have been able to design my own kitchen and have all of the cabinets custom built by a master cabinet maker so I had everything exactly the way I wanted and designed it to be. So I have to admit that I was spoiled in that regard, having everything exactly the way I wanted. That’s really hard to compete with, but since we were planning to move about seven hundred miles away we really needed to get a different house.

From time to time I think about how I would redesign this kitchen if I had the chance, and I have to admit that I really don’t know any way to make it better, given the shape and size of the kitchen. Except for that dropped counter.
