Wouldn’t you know it

by Mary Anne

When I was married to my first husband, we were invited every summer to join his parents and their big extended family for a week in Cape Cod. Everyone would get together and have a Cape Cod vacation rental cottage within walking distance of each other and have a great family reunion at the beach all week long.

My husband never wanted to go to any of these, even though I DID want to go. Since he didn’t want to go, we never did go. Not once. I knew if I pushed the issue he would just pout and make me miserable with his passive-aggressive behavior, and it just wasn’t worth putting up with his crabby attitude.

We were married for thirteen years, and every year he would say he did not want to go. When we broke up, all of a sudden he started going to those Cape Cod family weeks! Wouldn’t you know it! When we were going through marriage counseling he admitted that there were a lot of times that he wanted to go and do things but declared himself uninterested and unwilling to do them simply because he knew that I wanted to do them and he wanted to prevent me from doing them. What a guy!

I’ve been to Cap Code once – to drive around the town, and never did get to leave the car. Maybe one day I’ll be able to actually go there and spend a couple of days and find out for myself why so many people like to go there!

Internships

by Mary Anne

My son is considering taking an internship this summer in New York City.  Of course, being his mother, I’d rather he take an internship closer to home.  I miss him when he is away at college in New Jersey, and I would love it if he would take an internship that would allow me to see him frequently.  But chances are that he will NOT take a local internship. Of course if I were young, single, footloose and fancy free, I’d jump at the chance to travel around too! Can’t hardly blame him for wanting to enjoy life while he can!

Down in Dothan

by Mary Anne

Most people have never heard of Dothan, Alabama. It is way down in the farthest southeast corner of the state, just above the Florida state line, and just a stone’s throw away from the border with Georgia, to the east. I first heard of Dothan because a good friend of mine married a guy from Dothan. He was a fireman for the City of Dothan and knew a lot of medical stuff, so he would go out with the Rescue Squad and drive the ambulance, too. He told me that home security Dothan was becoming a serious issue for the people who lived just outside of town, and he had dozens of stories to share with us about Rescue Squad calls to help people who were victims of crime and accidents out on those country roads.

My girlfriend says she met him one night when they were just hanging around the fire station. Some of the guys were watching Direct TV and a couple of them were playing the board game, Monopoly. When she and her BFF walked in, the guys playing Monopoly invited the girls to join the game. She says the game lasted 8 hours before her future hubby won that game and she fell in love with him that night. Not because he won the game, but because they had 8 wonderful hours together, laughing and teasing each other, telling stories and getting to know each.

i think that is the loveliest love story I’ve ever heard.

My new used car

by Mary Anne

We finally decided it was appropriate to buy a “new to me” used car.  I had been driving a 1998 Subaru Outback Sport which is fine for one or two people, but it was our only car and we were using it to transport four adults, so it was cramped.  We searched for a a couple of weeks for the “perfect” car and settled on a low mileage Chevrolet Lumina.  It is comfortable enough for five adults and seems to get better gas mileage than the Subaru.  I like it a lot because the ride is soft and smooth and gives me the feel of driving an expensive luxury car.

Vacations

by Mary Anne

My thoughts today turned to planning our next vacation.  We have a condo in Florida, just a few miles from Disney World, but we haven’t been able to go down there for several years now.  That’s really sad because I know that United Airlines always has really cheap flights from here to there every day!  We’ve tried for at least six years now to sell that condo because money has been so tight, but we just keep getting ripped off by companies that promise to sell it and don’t.

Well, this morning it occurred to me that if we can’t afford to pay for the flights to go down there, then we should offer the use of the condo for free to our adult kids for them to use on THEIR vacation.  It’s not something that my hubby has wanted to do (he has a hard time sharing) but when I mentioned it to him today he was all for it!  So I’m going to mention it to our kids right off before he changes his mind!
