There is a lot to it

by Mary Anne

My sister is the one who got me started with blogging. I can remember several years ago when we were talking on the phone she mentioned that she had been reading some blogs on the Internet that she thought I’d enjoy reading. I told her to send me the links to the blogs, and I read them too. At that point I became interested in blogging as well. She set me up with my domain name and signed me up with a web hosting company, and I reimbursed her through paypal.

I was like a babe in the woods back then; I had no idea how to arrange for a domain or website hosting – in fact I did not even realize that you could buy a domain from one organization and then get your web site hosting from a completely different company! I thought it was a big monopoly, like the telephone company used to be! Slowly I’m learning more about the Internet business, but it sure is a lot more complicated than I could ever imagine it to be. The people who created this stuff are pure genius. Absolute genius.

Shopping with coupons

by Mary Anne

I love to shop with coupons!  When I bought my Roomba vacuum I used a coupon that was in the Sunday paper for 20% off any one item.  Since the Roomba was about $300, I saved about $60, which is a lot of money (both to spend and to save!)  But I am thinking the purchase will be worth it because right now I could use the help with the house cleaning!

Today I went grocery shopping and saved $20 on the items that we bought. These items were things that we actually use everyday. I’m so glad that I can save money that way.

The new guy

by Mary Anne

Working with the new man, Sunday, (yes, his name is Sunday) I’ve been learning a little bit about his native country, Nigeria. I’ve been helping him to better understand some of the nuances of the English language and some of the customs (and jokes) that seem so foreign to him. Sometimes it is really funny when someone at work says something and he completely misunderstands it. But sometimes that leads to misunderstandings and frustrations in a bad way.

His wife recently had a baby girl; their very first baby. Sunday was telling us that she sings Nigerian Songs to the baby and that they watch Nigerian Movies at home on his days off. We tried to convince him that he should start to watch shows like Sesame Street with his daughter, but he said he didn’t have any interest in watching shows like that.  I’ve noticed that there are a lot of adults that don’t like to watch children’s shows with their kids, and I think that is a shame – I can remember watching Sesame Street with my kids when they were small! I suggested that he put on headphones and listen to Online Nigerian Music while watching children’s shows with his daughter to at least give her the impression that he was spending time with her watching something geared towards children. But knowing him, he won’t follow my advice. Guys rarely do.

Eyes

by Mary Anne

A few years ago my brother had his eyes “done” with Lasik, and he has been encouraging me to have my eyes “done.”  The biggest reason I haven’t had them “done” was the cost factor – my insurance won’t cover it.

However, with the thought in mind that my eyeglasses are getting more expensive every time I buy them, I have been giving serious thought to Lasik surgery, as I think that eventually the cost factor will end up being a mute point!

My hearfelt prayers to Turkey’s earthquake victims

by Mary Anne

I have been hearing about Turkey’s recent earthquake, and the devestation it has caused. What terrible, tragic news. Seems as if every time I turn around some terrible disaster is hitting someplace! Sometimes I wonder if the tragedies are coming faster and harder than they used to, or if I’m just now becoming more aware of them. If it’s me, I wonder if it is just because I’ve been so focused on my own little corner of the world that I haven’t paid much attention to anything beyond the boundaries of my own yard, or if it is because the information age is making it so much more “in your face” than it used to be.
