Would you go if you had tickets given to you?

by Mary Anne

My hubby and I were offered a pair of cheap sports tickets to go to the Masters later this week, but we had to decline the offer. We had already made plans to entertain his daughter and her boyfriend when they were coming down here for a visit at the same time as the Masters. To be perfectly honest, I think that I’m just as happy staying home and watching the tournament on television than physically being there, but the biggest reason for that is I do not tolerate heat very well, and I do not enjoy standing on my feet for hours on end and being in crowds. I truly do understand how difficult it is to play golf, I have tried to play it a few times myself. There is a lot of practice and skill and athletic ability in playing that game. But when I am in a crowd, I find that I get very anxious, almost to the point of having a panic attack! I find myself having a memory “flash back” to the time that I was standing in line to see the Rolling Stones in concert on the 4th of July in 1972. The crowd got very restless and started shoving people. That scared me to no end; I thought that I was going to be crushed to death! Ever since then I’ve tried really hard to avoid crowds.

So, every time I watch a golf tournament on television it appears to me that there are crowds of fans stationed at different holes, standing around waiting to see one of the players walk by. Seems as if they are standing in the hot sun, and every now and then one of the members of the audience gets beaned by a stray golf ball. Good grief, that must hurt like a son-of-a-gun! I think that if the courses had some comfortable seats for the audience, with plenty of shade, big fans to move the air, and some food vendors nearby I’d consider going. But then again, you know what? I’d rather give the Masters tickets to a real diehard fan to enjoy the show while I sat in comfort at the nineteenth hole.

Ski holidays in Whistler

by Mary Anne

One of the things that I like to do is watch television shows and movies that involve scenes on a ski resort. One of my favorite past times when I was younger was to go down hill skiing. Just being in the ski lodge, soaking up the energy of all of the other skiers put a smile on my face. The clean and crisp mountain air never failed to fill my soul with joy. I was never a big fan of the expert slopes, but I could hold my own. I just thought it was too much work and strain on my knees. I preferred a nice ride down an intermediate slope, where I could be challenged in spots, but simply enjoy the view and feel at peace with the world.

Recently I’ve been seeing the local ski club has been trying to organize a couple of Ski holidays in Whistler. To be perfectly honest I didn’t remember that Whistler was the site of the Winter Olympics a few years back. If I were thirty years younger I would jump at the offer to be part of the trip, which includes a chartered bus, ski accommodation in Whistler, all meals included and discount whistler lift passes.

But I am now a woman who has too many physical frailties to be able to go downhill skiing any more. Although from time to time I get to thinking that maybe, just maybe, if I got the chance to go for one more day of skiing, even if it was the bunny slope, I would love to go. And feel the rush of adrenaline that I get when I look up the mountain from the lodge and see the slopes waiting to be conquered one more time.

Trophy wall

by Mary Anne

When I was in school I tried out for sports teams and never got picked for any of them, with the exception of the gymnastics team. Our school only went to one gymnastics meet, and we were soundly beaten by everyone. Our coach told us not to worry about it because we only had about three weeks to practice and the school we went up against had a lot of wealthy students that had obviously been taking private lessons for years. We sure felt like a bunch of ragamuffins against them, that is for sure. Needless to say, there are no sport trophies on my trophy wall. At least, not with my name on them!

Post card from Tiffany

by Mary Anne

Tiffany has always led a charmed life. We were really good friends when we went to school together, and even though she moved to the west coast she keeps in touch and sends me post cards from her fabulous travels around the world. If I didn’t keep reminding myself that I’m really not the adventurous type I would probably be extremely envious of her great life.

So in today’s mail is a post card from Tiffany, coming from Le Village Arc 1950 in France. The photograph shows a charming Les Arcs Accommodation; it looks like a wonderful skiing vacation village. Much like the village I stayed in many years ago when I went skiing in New England. Janene writes that the Apartments in Les Arc have great amenities and that she can ski right from their front door.

Brings back fond memories of my youth. Thank you Tiffany.

Snow fun

by Mary Anne

Jessica called me up to ask me if she could borrow my skiing outfit – the down filled jacket and the bib skiing pants, the wool hat, the down filled mittens. She told me that Randy has invited her to go with her on a skiing trip early next month up in Vermont. Apparently this is part of his ski-club activities; they are chartering a bus and renting condominiums on the mountainside so that when they get up in the morning all they have to do is strap on their skis and ski from the condo to the ski lift.

That brought back memories of when I used to go skiing when I was younger. That was so much fun. I used to tell people it was the most fun a person could have while still wearing all of their clothes! I miss those days a lot. So I told Jessica to come on over in a couple of days and I’d try to find them and lend them to her. After all, what are good friends for?
