One of the things that has bothered me ever since we moved down here is how many ticks there seem to be. Almost every time my family spends more than a couple of minutes outdoors, they seem to be coming inside and finding a tick or two trying to make itself at home. I’ve never been very good at removing ticks, it seems that even though I try really hard to remove them correctly the head seems to stay in the bite and then there is a swelling around the bite that takes a very long time to fade away.

The folks on the Yahoo groups that I belong to are frequently writing about how they keep a small flock of backyard chickens to help keep the ticks at bay. In addition they say that they enjoy all of the fresh eggs that they could possibly want. From time to time they offer up some chickens for sale and my hubby and I discuss the ins and outs of owning chickens. My biggest concerns involve predators and who would care for them if we went on vacation. I really don’t think we just dump a bunch of chicken feed in a trough and leave them for a week.

Guest post by Linda Bradshaw

When my hubby and I moved into our first house, we were so excited to share our joy with our friends. So we had a big Independence Day party; complete with a pot-luck barbecue and pool party. The guests were completely enamored of our litter of five week old keeshond puppies, which were confined inside their six foot tall chain link kennel run.

One of our guests (which I did not want invited but hubby insisted) decided that he would light a string of black cat firecrackers and throw them into the kennel run. The quick bang-bang-bang and yelp-yelp-yelp brought my hubby and me running quickly to see what in the world was going on. When we saw the inebriated guest laughing at the upset puppies, we asked him to leave the party. Needless to say, feelings were hurt.

The next morning when we went out to feed the puppies, we discovered that someone had removed them from their kennel and put them inside the fenced in pool area. The puppies had all drowned in the pool. My heart was completely broken. Later that day we went to the pool supply store and bought a pool cover for our swimming pool in the hopes that this kind of tragedy never happens again. And I never spoke to that guy that had thrown firecrackers into the puppy pen, as we suspect that he was the one responsible for relocating the puppies. It would have been impossible for the puppies to escape their pen and enter the fenced in pool area on their own.

Poor Squeaky is getting so old and uncomfortable with her arthritis that I decided that we really needed to buy her a couple of memory foam dog beds to use. One in the living room, and one in the bedroom. That way she can sleep near us and be more comfortable while doing it. Unfortunately the durn cat has decided that he wanted to use them as supplemental kitty litter boxes, and after several attempts to clean them appropriately and prevent the cat from repeatedly soiling them, we determined that we needed to replace them with waterproof/weatherproof orthopedic dog beds.

Our hope was that the waterproof dog beds would be able to be washed off easily enough for the odor to be eliminated, but that was not to be. After a couple of weeks of constantly cleaning those dog beds, we ended up just putting them outside in the hope that the sun and the rain would deodorize them.
You may suggest that we “get rid of “ the cat, and although we did discuss that as an alternative solution, his advancing age was also something we had to consider.

With all of the cats and dogs he has running around his house, I’m pretty sure that he is going to want to store the guitar up off of the floor to keep it protected from the dangers of a run-in with any of the four-legged critters.

Last night while I was watching the news, I heard Riley tearing into something that sounded like paper. He was hiding under the kitchen table, happily opening the nicely wrapped gift box of tillman gloves that I had bought my hubby for a Christmas present. He had apparently found my stash of hidden gifts in the closet and decided that this one smelled yummy, and wanted a snack. Well, when Riley gets something like that to tear into, anyone who tries to get it from him ends up getting bitten. I had to get my son to help me get it from him, using a squirt bottle and a broom stick to subdue Riley into compliance. Fortunately we managed to get them away from him before he had ruined the gloves. I would have been very upset if I had to buy another pair!

I am a neat freak. I love a clean, orderly house. Unfortunately, I live with slobs and pets. So, I have had to lower my standards a lot in order to maintain any sanity at all.

One of the most difficult problems I’ve had to deal with is helping our newest pet, a little white dog to learn proper house manners. He is an unneutered male dog who has a tendency to “mark” his territory inside the house from time to time. I understand that when he is neutered that should decrease significantly, and we plan to neuter him when we can scrape together the money. In the meantime, we are dealing with trying to teach him to stop marking his territory inside, and trying to clean up the spots he’s marked.

Our new puppy is incredibly affectionate and I love cuddling with him. But sometimes it gets in the way of what I need to do. He loves to sit next to me on the sofa when I watch TV, or on the bed with me if I want to use my laptop for a little while and get away from the noise of the living room.

But tonight he seems to want more attention than usual. When he sits on the bed next to me, he keeps laying his head across my arm and looking up at me and crying. It is so cute! But I can’t move my hand to type with his head laying across my arm. Every time I push him away, he comes right back and cries louder!

My son, hubby, and I went to a new all you can eat buffet restaurant last night. It was pretty good, and we will probably go there again. The highlight of the evening, though, was the sighting of a HUGE turtle in the parking lot! This thing was bigger than my dog! It drew quite a crowd. Apparently the turtle belongs to the pet store that is located in the same shopping mall as the restaurant, and they decided to let it go for a walk! I’ve never seen a turtle that big outside of a zoo-like atmosphere! I don’t know if it is for sale or not, I didn’t ask.

The house is awfully quiet without them; the dog needed to be neutered, and the cat needed his teeth cleaned and a tumor removed. It is going to cost a huge amount of money, but it needed to be done. The dog had some kind of strange medical condition that could lead to prostate cancer if we didn’t have him neutered soon. And, I remember how nuts he went the last time the neighbor’s dog went into heat; the poor guy was going crazy trying to go be with her!

We have a second dog, who is still here in the house with us. She doesn’t quite know what to make of the house being all hers for a change! I think she’s a little bit anxious. I’ll be glad when the other two are back home again. The vet said we can bring them home tomorrow.

Well, both the dog and cat survived their ordeals at the vet. We were surprised how much of the cat got shaved to remove his tumor; the vet said that they were surprised how big the tumor actually was when they opened him up, it was much much larger than they expected.

And our little dog survived just fine. I was a little bit nervous that he might have a heart condition that would complicate surgery, but they said he had no problems at all.

So the pets are back, and the first day they were here they were a little bit quieter than normal, but extra lovey. Now they are back to their regular selves. It’s good to have them home again.

I went grocery shopping yesterday and decided to buy a couple of new dog toys for our dogs. They have squeakers in them, but are largish in size; they remind me of the stuffed animal toys I had as a kid. Anyway, I had heard that dogs can see a few colors; they gravitate towards blue, so I bought two blue teddy bear squeaky toys. When I got home with the groceries and had put all the food away, I gave the toys to the dogs. What fun they have had playing with the toys! Our big dog has pretty effectively ripped most of the stuffing out of one already in her desperate attempt to kill the squeaky part. What a mess! Now I wish I hadn’t bothered to vacuum yesterday! I’m going to have to vacuum again tomorrow!
