Bridal shower invitations

by Mary Anne

You can imagine my surprise when my neighbor Danielle called me on the phone yesterday to ask me for my help with her daughter’s bridal shower. To be perfectly honest, I think that it is probably a breech of etiquette for her to be calling me and asking me to help her with that, (I mean, if she is the mother of the bride, should she be doing that – I thought that was the responsibility of the matron/maid of honor?) but I’m not the type of person to come right out and say something like “that’s not the “proper thing to do.” I try to get along with people, and telling them that they are doing something egregious like that just isn’t my style.

Anyway, Danielle asked me to come over to her place tomorrow afternoon and help her to fill out, address, and stamp the bridal shower invitations for her daughter’s bridal shower. She is getting married in July and they want to have the shower two weeks before the wedding.

The phone call got me to thinking about how long it has been since I’ve been involved in any way in the planning and/or preparation for a wedding. Or for that matter, even attended a wedding! To be perfectly honest, I think that the last time I was at a wedding was my very own wedding back eleven years ago! And prior to that it was probably back in 1992. Wow – that is a very long time between wedding ceremonies! For a moment I was starting to wonder why it was that it has been so long since I had gone to any weddings – should I start to do some serious soul searching about my worthiness as a friend, or what exactly is going on here.

Looking around at my friends and family, though, I realize that most of the people of my generation either have been married a long time, or have no intention of ever getting married. And our kids, well, they are just too busy having fun being single and pursuing their education and careers to even be considering getting married. Which I think is interesting, and wondering if this is a new trend nationwide, since most of these kids are already in their late twenties and up to their mid thirties. I think weddings just aren’t as important to people as they used to be. What do YOU think?

Motorized buggies at the store

by Mary Anne

I appreciate the fact that Wal-Mart has those motorized carts available for the people with disabilities, I really do. In recent months, my hubby has been shopping with me on mornings, and he utilizes those carts when he comes with me. He needs one to get around such a large store.

We are early birds; we get up around 4 – 5 am every morning. We have a Wal-Mart that is open 24/7, so we try to get our shopping done really early in the morning before the crowds hit.

We were sorely disappointed yesterday when we arrived at our Wal-Mart around 7am and found that we could not even get to the motorized carts; they were blocked by one of those machines that they use in the parking lots to retrieve the regular shopping carts. It took me over ten minutes to find an employee that was willing to move that thing out of our way.

Once that was done, we found that only one of the motorized carts had been plugged in and charged overnight, and it was blocked in by all of the carts that had no charge at all and could not be moved easily. We could not find an employee to move the “dead” carts out of the way, so my hubby and I were forced to try to drag the “dead” carts by ourselves to get to the “live” cart.

Very frustrating, very disappointing.

Energy audit

by Mary Anne

There is a networking meeting that I go to every week where a lot of businesses send a representative to the meeting to try to drum up business for their company. One thing that I’ve noticed is that a lot of the people that go to the meetings really don’t seem to be interested in helping each other out at all, which is a little bit disappointing because the entire concept of a networking meeting is to help each other, right?

What’s even more disappointing is the fact that some of the people that go to the meetings seem to claim that they will give you a free offer of some kind, in order to drum up business for themselves, but when you contact them and ask them to do it, they don’t even call you back! For example, there is a guy there that is a home insulation contractor that goes every week and will stand up and tell people that his company will perform a free energy audit and he hands out business cards with the web page address of his company, saying that they have a list of energy saving solutions on their web site, but when I tell him that I want to schedule an audit for my house he never gets back to me! I have even gone to his web page and filled out the request form and they don’t get back to me! Is that any way to run a business?

Tired of junk mail

by Mary Anne

I don’t know about you, but I get so tired of all of the junk mail that I get almost every day. What irritates me even more is all of the resources that are wasted producing and delivering the junk mail! When I get junk mail, sometimes I shred it, sometimes I just toss it in the trash.  Sometimes, if it has a postage-paid return envelope in it I will tear up everything except the postage-paid return envelope, put it all inside the postage-paid return envelope and mail it back to the company that sent it to me.

I think that the US Post Office continues to raise the rates of stamps because they are not getting enough work (competing with Email, UPS, FedEx, etc) so this is a relatively painless way to give them more work at the expense of some other company! So, it is creating a little bit of job security for the Post Office workers, and some job security for the people who end up opening the envelope at the company it is going to! And, hopefully, their company recycles (most big companies do) so maybe the papers will get recycled there instead of filling up the junk yards in the local municipalities!

Why do fashion designers hate women?

by Mary Anne

More and more I have been wondering why is it that many fashion designers appear to hate women? I’m not referring to sexual preference in the romance department, I am talking about how ugly so many of the “new” fashions are. By now it should be fairly obvious and well known that horizontal stripes make a person look fatter than they really are. So why, then, are so many clothes that arjumpsuite for extra-large people available only in horizontal stripe patterns? For example, I enjoy going to different discount websites and take advantage of some of the savings that are offered there. Some of the products are great, and I’m glad that I have bought them. But some of them are mind-boggling ugly as – well I can’t really think of a good description of ugly that I can type on my blog and keep it family oriented!

For example, this morning I saw a “fantastic deal” on this jumpsuit. Hopefully the photograph that I’m including will show up. I just can’t imagine how anyone in their right mind would find this jumpsuit appealing, and yet according to the website, the jumpsuit is sold out. I’m wondering if it was sold out because a lot of men that have no taste whatsoever thought that they would buy this as a Mother’s Day gift for their wife, hoping that the wife would be thrilled to pieces. I pray that my hubby has enough sense to never buy anything like this for me! The horizontal stripes on this would make my legs look so fat, and the entire rest of my body too! What do you think about this? Would YOU like to wear something like this?
