Paying with cash

by Mary Anne

I was just reading on Yahoo News that a man in Utah was given a ticket for disorderly conduct for paying cash for a disputed medical bill. When I saw the headline I thought that was really odd, so I read the story. Well, apparently the man paid a $25 bill with 2500 pennies, which really should not be all that big a deal, but the way he dumped all of the pennies on the counter a bunch of them got strewn around the floor and office and he demanded that the staff count them right then and there.

Well, the staff was upset about his presentation and called the police. I think that the guy earned that ticket, don’t you?

Flooding in the Midwest

by Mary Anne

The weather has been so extreme this year. In the past several weeks there were 100′s of tornadoes that have killed people in Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee. There have been wild fires in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arkansas, and now there is flooding in Iowa, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas.

So is it just me? Or does the fact that Arkansas has experienced all three of these natural disasters, plus some recent earthquake clusters AND the unexplained death of thousands of blackbirds in three cities mean anything?

My heart goes out to the good people of Arkansas. I hope they find some peace from all this bad weather soon.

A Welcome Relief

by Mary Anne

President Obama just announced on live TV that the United States has found and killed Bin Laden. I am relieved that this horrible man is no longer a threat to our country nor the people in other countries that have suffered from his vicious attacks over the past 10 years.

Although I am not comfortable celebrating the death of another human being, I do not believe that Bin Laden was a person who would ever stop of his own accord and I do not believe that he would ever be able to be rehabilitated. So, I accept the news of death with relief – not joy.

The kid who was pepper sprayed

by Mary Anne

I was watching The Today Show this morning and they were showing a story about an eight year old boy who threw a temper tantrum in a public school and was pepper sprayed by police. At first hearing, it sounded like the police had over-reacted, but as the story unfolded I have to say that I believe that the police did the right thing. It’s a terrible thought, I agree, but this child has had several temper tantrums before at school and this was the third time that the police were called in for this child. This child was posing a physical threat to the teachers and needed to be stopped. Although pepper spray is painful, it is not a permanent damage, and it resolved the problem without actually hurting anyone. Maybe the next time the child feels like throwing a temper tantrum he’ll think twice about it!

The mother was being interviewed and said that the boy has not had problems like this at home, that the problems are in school when they transition from a free time (like recess) to a structed time, like studying.  Maybe the reason that the child never has this problem at home is because there is more leeway for him to transition from one to the other.  Times like these make me glad that my kids are all grown up!

Increased Risk of Nuclear Catastrophy

by Mary Anne

This morning’s news brought even worse news about the tragedies in Japan. Not only have those poor people suffered from the extensive damages of a 9.0 earthquake, one of the strongest in history, but they have lost entire towns to the destructive powers of the tsunami that immediately followed the quake. But those events have caused horrific, unanticipated damage to several of the nuclear power plants. The nuclear reactors are close to a catastrophic meltdown, which would release a lot of radioactive particles into our atmosphere.

The Japanese government is asking some people who live close to the power plants to evacuate and they are dispensing doses of iodine to help avoid radiation poisoning.

This whole series of events is horrifying to me. I feel such tremendous sorrow and helplessness for the people of Japan.
