When we decided that it was time to go ahead and buy another family car, we agreed that we would take a look at the used cars available for sale to see if we could get a decent used car for a reasonable price. We really did not want to have to take out a loan to buy a new car if we could avoid it. So we were really pleased when we found this used Lumina for sale at a local used car dealer at a reasonable price. The car looked like it was in really great shape and had really low mileage. When we asked how a car over ten years old could have such low mileage on it the sales man said that the first owner of the car was a little old lady (yeah, how many times have we heard that before?) who gave her car to her grandson because he needed a car. The ungrateful brat used a car title loans Michigan service to borrow money against the car and then never made any payments on the car at all. So the car got repossessed and we ended up with a decent low-mileage car at a decent price to boot! Their loss, our gain!

Earlier today I was reading an article titled “solar is made easy” and it got me really excited about the future of solar energy. For as long as I can remember I have been an advocate for harnessing the potential clean sources of energy such as wind power and solar energy. Unfortunately I have never been wealthy enough to be able to afford to retrofit my existing home with these newer technologies, but I am hopeful that as time passes the technologies will decrease in price (as it always does) and that I will be able to either retrofit my home with these types of technologies or buy a different house that utilizes them.

These new technologies are very important to me because they will help us to slow down the pollution that we contribute to the ever-growing pollution problem. Ever since I can remember the teachers in my schools have been encouraging their students to reduce, reuse and recycle, and find ways to promote the conservation of our planet. Sometimes I wish that I had been able to go to college to get a degree in conservation and make my living in that field; I feel so strongly that too many people are trashing our planet. When solar energy becomes mainstream, I think it will be a great leap forward in preserving our planet!

One of the important things that kids need to think about, when it comes to career planning is if they are going to go into medicine, is how much they will need to pay for medical malpractice insurance. I remember about thirty years ago when I was friends with a guy who was thinking about becoming a pediatrician that he was telling me that when he got the medical malpractice insurance quote for going into a private practice by himself that he decided to join a group of doctors because the cost of the insurance was lower if he was associated with a group. Going out on his own was more than he could afford. I think it’s really sad that so many good medical practitioners have to charge really high prices to their patients because of the cost of insurance!

One of the most difficult questions a kid can ask their parent is “What kind of job should I be working towards getting when I get out of school?”

I’ve heard that question several times from my kids, and it is a tough one. I want them to be ultimately happy with the work that they do, but they also need to earn enough money to pay their bills! And in today’s global market, and the new technologies that are already out there, and being developed, technology seems to be the key to the answer.

My advice has always been for them to think about their favorite subject in school and then talk to their teacher about what professions there are that use that knowledge from the class. What do YOU tell your kids?

After I got up and showered this morning I was getting dressed and ripped a sock. I hope that is not an indication of how today is going to be going!

At first I was going to just toss the sock in the trash, but then I decided that I will try to darn it to repair it. In this economy, I’m trying to pinch every penny and stretch every dollar. It’s been a few years since I’ve darned socks, but it isn’t hard to do. So I’ve put the sock aside for now, will try to get to darning it this evening after supper.

I found that when it ripped and I was looking at the rip, thinking about darning it, memories of my step-mother teaching me how to darn socks came to mind. I remember how she had a wooden bulb to use as a form to put inside the sock while working on it. I don’t have one of those; I’ll just use a light bulb. I find it interesting how often small and seemingly insignificant things will trigger a memory of a person!

Lately whenever one of us goes out and the telephone rings, and my caller ID shows me that it is the cellphone of the person that has gone out, my mind immediately starts to wonder “what is wrong with the car now!” Twice in the past week my son has called to let us know that the car he is driving won’t start. The first time it was a broken serpentine belt. Second time it was a bad battery terminal. I didn’t even know that you could replace battery terminals!

It seems that all of our vehicles need immediate repairs. Brakes, transmission, ignition switch, starter, serpentine belts, steering, new batteries! It’s going to cost a fortune to fix them all. I’m getting discouraged about keeping up with all of the costs of living. And yet fixing the cars costs less than buying new ones. It’s not just about the monthly payments, although all of our vehicles are paid off. It is partly because the insurance payments would go up too. The vehicles don’t LOOK old and beat up, but they are getting old. I would like to just keep driving them forever. I hope things get better soon!

I could not believe my ears yesterday when my husband told me that a lamp does not use any more electricity when it is turned on than when it is turned off. He claimed that if the lamp was plugged in then it was using electricity. Can you believe that he thought he could convince me of that? I told him that he was insulting my intelligence, and that I am a lot smarter than I look. Imagine, trying to convince me of that.

It all started when I reminded him to please turn off the lights and television in the living room when he is done for the night and going to bed and is the last person in the room. Does that sound like a reasonable request to you? I swear, sometimes I think that I’m the only one in the house that gives a darn about saving energy and trying to reduce our utility bills. Of course since I’m the one that pays that bill no one else cares at all, and that is obvious by the fact that I am the one that runs around the house turning things off.

One thing I am doing as well is making sure that all of the double glazing windows that we have are locked tight. I’ve noticed in the past when someone opens a window to let in the fresh air, when they close it again that there often is a gap up at the top of the window that no one notices until they go to lock it. It’s lucky that it has been a mild winter so far; the cold draft coming in from the windows would really be costing me a fortune in heating bills!

Ever since we found out about the business opportunity that is on the market, we’ve been looking for ways that we can afford to buy it. We weren’t really in the market to buy anything; this was a surprise opportunity. We’ve called our local banks, the two that we do business with to see if they are going to be able to help us. We think we have good credit, but to be perfectly honest, I’m not sure. It scares me to think that we might have to apply for any business loans with bad credit, because I’m concerned that the interest rate will increase the monthly payment so high that we can’t afford it. Wish me luck!

Have you ever wanted to start a software library at home? CD Earth is an Internet company that has been set up to help consumers build up a software library without breaking their piggy bank. CDEarth is a club that consumers join in order to build up their software library. Once a consumer joins the club the club member receives four CDs to evaluate. Two of the CDs are free to keep. The other two CDs the club member either returns or keeps. If the club member decides to keep all four CDs, then the club member has to pay $14.99 plus shipping and handling for each of the two “non-free” CDs. After that, about every seven to eight weeks the club member receives two more CDs to evaluate and either keep or return. Again, if the club member keeps them then the club member pays the $14.99 plus shipping and handling for each CD that is kept.

The club member can cancel membership at any time. There is a variety of software to choose from several different interest areas – children’s software, business software, family interest software, games, creative, and graphics. The family interest group includes a software program with 10,001 recipes in it! I’d be interested in that!

Women have come a long way in their struggle for equality with men. But generally speaking, women still do not earn as much money in the job market as men do. Women earn only about 77 cents for every dollar that men earn.

I find this news very discouraging; I feel that women should earn the same amount of money if they are doing the same work as their male counterparts.

When I first entered the job market umpteen years ago, I found that the company that I worked for systematically paid the male employees more money than they paid the female employees – for the exact same job. When I inquired why that was so, the reply was that “men had families to support and needed the money more than the females did.”

The logic behind that assumption was that the men that worked there were married, with children, and that the wives stayed home to take care of the children. And the assumption continued that the women that worked there were young and single and only had to worry about supporting themselves. So the company felt that they were paying their employees based on their employees needs, rather than on their level of production.

I have always felt that if I am producing at the same level as another person, I should be paid the same as that other person, regardless of marital/family status. I ended up going to work for a large, unionized corporation, where the union contract prevented that type of wage gap discrimination. For me, that was the best option for me to be treated more fairly.

My sister used to clean houses in the past to make a little bit of extra money, and she was really good at that. She had quite a few customers. She hasn’t done that for several years now, but she is still getting phone calls from people asking her to come clean their house!
Where we live, more and more families are two-income families, which leaves them little time to clean house. The demand for cleaning services is on the increase, and I think that this would be a good opportunity for her to make some money running a business that she already is familiar with!

One of the many gifts that I like to give is a gift basket. Sometimes I like to make them up myself of lots of little things that I’ve made, either crafting or cooking, or a combination of the two. Doing that pretty much ensures that they are not getting a duplicate gift that someone else has given them.

Sometimes life gets hectic, and an unexpected gift giving occasion arrives and time doesn’t allow the luxury of making the gifts. That’s when buying a gourmet gift basket comes to the rescue. There are so many gourmet gift baskets on the market, it is pretty easy to find one that will suit almost any occasion and please any recipient.
