When we decided that it was time to go ahead and buy another family car, we agreed that we would take a look at the used cars available for sale to see if we could get a decent used car for a reasonable price. We really did not want to have to take out a loan to buy a new car if we could avoid it. So we were really pleased when we found this used Lumina for sale at a local used car dealer at a reasonable price. The car looked like it was in really great shape and had really low mileage. When we asked how a car over ten years old could have such low mileage on it the sales man said that the first owner of the car was a little old lady (yeah, how many times have we heard that before?) who gave her car to her grandson because he needed a car. The ungrateful brat used a car title loans Michigan service to borrow money against the car and then never made any payments on the car at all. So the car got repossessed and we ended up with a decent low-mileage car at a decent price to boot! Their loss, our gain!

I was not very happy when the repair shop called me today to tell me that I needed a new transmission bearing. I had just paid several hundred dollars on a new transmission on that car, and I don’t think that I should have to even be learning what a transmission bearing is or what it does. I just turned the telephone over to my hubby and asked him to take care of it. Then I left the room and started to sort laundry. When my hubby finished with the phone call he told me that he was going to be able to do the repairs himself in the shop we built out back for him to work on his hot rods. All we need to do is find the parts. That made me feel a little bit better, but I still think that the new transmission should be under some kind of warranty, don’t you agree?

I’m pretty sure that I mentioned that I’m planning to redecorate the master bedroom at some point in time, and that I’m trying to do it in a “Harley Davidson” theme to make my hubby happy!

I’m thinking about trying to make the curtains fit the theme somehow. I’ve already told my hubby that he has to help me with the curtain rods – I told him that they somehow have to have a “motorcycle feel” to them, which means that they will have to be chrome and will have to suggest either motorcyle exhaust pipes or motorcycle handlebars. I’ll be curious to see what he can come up with!

I’m not quite sure what I will sew to hang off of the curtain rods, I’m thinking about something made from denim squares cut from old blue jeans, or maybe something made from faux leather, or maybe something from very silvery-chromy shiny fabric. Maybe try to make some tie-backs that look like motorcycle chains…….

Suggestions welcome!!!!!

Lately whenever one of us goes out and the telephone rings, and my caller ID shows me that it is the cellphone of the person that has gone out, my mind immediately starts to wonder “what is wrong with the car now!” Twice in the past week my son has called to let us know that the car he is driving won’t start. The first time it was a broken serpentine belt. Second time it was a bad battery terminal. I didn’t even know that you could replace battery terminals!

It seems that all of our vehicles need immediate repairs. Brakes, transmission, ignition switch, starter, serpentine belts, steering, new batteries! It’s going to cost a fortune to fix them all. I’m getting discouraged about keeping up with all of the costs of living. And yet fixing the cars costs less than buying new ones. It’s not just about the monthly payments, although all of our vehicles are paid off. It is partly because the insurance payments would go up too. The vehicles don’t LOOK old and beat up, but they are getting old. I would like to just keep driving them forever. I hope things get better soon!

Have you ever the saying “the difference between a man and a boy is the price of his toy?” Every time my hubby and I drive past a construction site he gets just as excited as a little six year old boy playing with construction toys in a sandbox. He exclaims “look at that backhoe” or “look at that dump truck” or “look at the size of that bull dozer.”

I’m never quite sure whether to feign interest or tell him I’m too busy trying to drive the car to be looking at the construction equipment. I’m sure he misses running his landscaping company that we used to run a few years back before we moved. He wanted to bring all of his equipment with him, but I insisted that we would not be self-employed after we moved. So he sold the business. He wanted to sell it lock, stock and barrel all together as a turn-key business but ended up selling it piecemeal. One of his employees bought the used backhoe loader and the used bull dozer from him. His father co-signed the bank papers for him to be able to buy them from us. Instead of listing the used compact tractor for sale he did convince me that he was going to need that down here to help do the landscaping work on the three acres of land we bought down here. He did list four of the used trucks for sale in the Uncle Henry’s magazine and ended up selling three of them that way, and he decided to give the fourth one to his daughter.

At least once a week, though, he teases me that he is going to go out and spend a couple of thousand dollars on some kind of construction equipment that we don’t need. I always tell him to buy himself a new wife while he is at it!

A short while ago I filled up my gas tank at a Texaco station. I saw that they were running a special rebate promotion for new Texaco credit card holders, so when I got home I went online and applied for a new Texaco credit card for myself, and a separate one for my hubby.

I got my card a few days later, but I noticed in my email in-box was a rejection letter for my hubby’s card. It turns out that he was rejected because they don’t think he is him! They said that they rejected him based on information from a credit report company. So I printed it off and gave it to my hubby and told him to call the credit report company, which he has been trying to do all morning long. I am concerned that this may have something to do with an identity theft attempt!

When my parents bought themselves a miniature RV, I asked them to let me buy it from them when they decided that they were tired of it and wanted to get rid of it. So when they gave it to my brother for free I was quite upset. Seems that he is always getting things for free from my folks while all I get is the shaft. Well, my brother used it to trade in on a larger RV to use to take to the races that he likes. He neglected to buy motorhome insurance on his new RV and his RV slipped out of gear when parked on a hill in his back yard. No one was hurt, but the RV is totalled. I feel evil that I don’t feel bad about it.

When we were looking at houses to buy in this area, I was adamant that the house have a basement, but that all of the daily living functions would be on only one floor. I did not want to have to worry about someone trying to go up and down stairs to go to bed, or to do the laundry. So that meant that we needed a ranch style or a rambler style house to meet my list of demands. As far as my husband was concerned, he was all about the garage. He wanted to have a detached garage that would be large enough for him to store a lot of his mechanics tools and his hobby vehicles.

One of the houses that we looked at had a large garage by Future Steel Buildings off to the side of the house. My husband fell right in love with that place, and his eyes shone with excitement when we were taking the tour of the garage. He could not have cared less if there was a refrigerator or stove in the kitchen, but I’ll tell you that he fell right in love with that garage!

Well, we ended up buying a different house, but my husband has been lobbying for a new Future steel buildings garage in the back ever since we moved in. I’ve told him to get some quotes together and we’d take a look at our finances and see if we could refinance the house with a lower interest rate and get some equity out of it in order to get him that garage that he is pining away for! I’m thinking that if I get him his garage, maybe he’ll be more inclined to do some of the automotive maintenance things that I need done to my car from time to time! Maybe he’ll even install a remote starter for me!

When I was shopping last week, I saw some enclosed bulletin boards on the walls of the store. These enclosed cork bulletin boards were being used to display public service notices and I have to assume that they were enclosed to prevent the items from becoming damaged. They weren’t locked, so it was not a matter of trying to prevent theft, I think it was just to eliminate dust and reduce maintenance.

But when I noticed them, it gave me a great idea for a gift for my hubby for Christmas! He dearly loves his Harley Davidson, and I have several pictures of him on it. I’m thinking about making a collage of sorts, embellished with scrapbooking trinkets and putting it all in a couple of shadow boxes or enclosed fabric bulletin boards. He can hang it on the wall in the garage near his Harley, or hang it on the wall in the bedroom. He’ll be thrilled!

We finally decided it was appropriate to buy a “new to me” used car. I had been driving a 1998 Subaru Outback Sport which is fine for one or two people, but it was our only car and we were using it to transport four adults, so it was cramped. We searched for a a couple of weeks for the “perfect” car and settled on a low mileage Chevrolet Lumina. It is comfortable enough for five adults and seems to get better gas mileage than the Subaru. I like it a lot because the ride is soft and smooth and gives me the feel of driving an expensive luxury car.

I’m thinking about buying my hubby a new set of leather chaps. I can remember a time when I was dating a guy who took a spill on his bike and he was only wearing jeans. He had a really bad case of road rash! I think chaps are silly looking, but I think that they are an important safety item for bike riding.

Dean has never been to Orange, VA, and there is a Harley Shop there. I’d heard that they were having a sale today and a promotion where you signed up for a drawing to win a new Harley, so I offered to go there with him. So we left home around noon, got there around one. Looked at all the Harleys, bought a pair of chaps, signed up for the drawing to win a new Harley, ate a free hot dog, looked at the detachable windshields and then came home. He was happy we went. As for me, well, I was glad he went so that he could learn his way around a little bit more. It is hard to get him to go places he hasn’t been before.

This morning I got a surprise phone call from my sister. She had good news and couldn’t wait to share it with everyone – she has a new job in Chicago! I am shocked! I can’t believe that she accepted a job up north!

She is going to be busy packing up everything in her house and getting ready to move up there. Thank goodness the new company is helping with moving expenses. But she says that she is selling her old car and leaving it behind so she can buy something new from a Chicago Honda Dealer when she gets to the Windy City. She sent me this link to check it out: http://www.ednapletonhonda.com

I’m so excited for her – she deserves a great job for a good company. This will give her a chance at a new life since her divorce. She can get a new apartment, that new Honda Accord she’s been wanting, and she’ll be meeting all new people.

I remember when she went up there for the interview last month. She was so sure she was going to get this job that she spent the rest of the afternoon at a Honda Dealer In Chicago, looking at new cars. She even reads the dealership’s blog now, to read up on all things Honda, I guess.

I wish I could get a new car. It sure would be nice to have something that wouldn’t be breaking down all the time. I could just call the dealer and bring it in for service instead of constantly searching for a mechanic that can do the work and can be trusted. Knock on wood, my car will hold out the rest of this year, and then after Christmas maybe I can shop around for my own new car next year.

I was interviewing today for a new job with a company that specializes in buying used luxury cars for their clients and then using an Auto Transport company to get the car to their client. This was my first peek inside the world of buying and selling used cars.

These folks had several people around the country that would go to local automobile auctions in search of a specific car, and bid on it. If they won the auction then they would arrange for Car Shipping to take the car to an auto detailing and repair place to make sure it was in good working condition and looking as new as possible. Then the buyer would come look at the car and determine if they want it or not. If they decide to actually buy it then they pay for it and either drive it home themselves or have a Car Transport company deliver it to their own homes.

I could not believe that in this economically troubled time how many people are in the market for luxury cars right now! I’ve never been a big fan of status symbols, and I consider luxury cars to be one of the biggest status symbols ever invented. I don’t know how I would feel working for a company like that. I have a certain amount of disdain for people who drive status symbols. Is that weird, or what!?
