Selling Chocolate

by Mary Anne

The kids who go to public school in my neighborhood are having a fund raiser this month. The kids are going door to door selling chocolate bars for one dollar.

One of the kids saw me drive up into my driveway this evening and came running over with a little cardboard box of candy and big expectant look on his face. So of course I bought a couple. Well, OK, I admit I bought five of them. But I won’t eat all of them very quickly. I’ll make these last at least a month.

Improvements needed

by Mary Anne

One of the things that really bothers me about getting old is that there’s going to be a time when my health care is going to be provided by Medicare. The reason that bothers me is that I’m always hearing political rhetoric about cutting back on what the politicians call “entitlements” and I know that includes Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

I have several elderly relatives that are completely dependent on these services and I just cannot imagine what would happen to them if they had those sources of income and care reduced. I already feel that the doughnut hole in the medicare part d program causes needless hardship to our senior citizens. I think that the doughnut hole should be completely eliminated and that our senior citizens should be allowed their medical needs for free.

Frozen chicken

by Mary Anne

Generally speaking I am not a big fan of frozen chicken products unless it’s in some kind of gravy are sauce. Once chicken has been frozen it tends to be very dry and I like moist chicken. Last week I needed to pick up some food for dinner and only had time to stop at one of the Wal-Marts that does not have the full selection of groceries. Looking through their refrigerator and freezer sections I was not very impressed with the options before me. I decided to buy a bag of frozen Tyson’s chicken strips which were breaded strips of chicken breast. It has been years since I have bought Tyson’s brand of chicken because we are trying to buy store brand as much as possible to save money.

While we all ate that chicken that night and we were all very impressed with how moist and delicious it was. I will buy that again! So now I have to keep my eyes open for coupons for Tyson’s chicken products!

Interesting concept

by Mary Anne

Have you seen anybody smoking an electronic cigarette? Not long ago a friend of mine told me That he was going to try to quit smoking through the use of an electric cigarette.

To be honest I do not know a lot about this concept – I’ve heard that the e cigarette was developed as a tool to use by people who have trouble giving up smoking tobacco products. This confuses me a little bit because I’m under the impression that the people who use these gadgets are still receiving nicotine in their system. I agree that at least the people around the smoker are not being exposed to toxic secondhand smoke so in that respect I think that this is a tool that should be explored.

I certainly hope that my friend is successful in his attempt to quit smoking. I quit smoking over 30 years ago and I know what a challenge it is to stop smoking. I have to admit that even now there are times that I crave a cigarette!

Severe thunderstorm last night

by Mary Anne

It rained heavily all day yesterday, which was a drag because I had to do my grocery shopping.  I don’t usually mind it when it rains, as long as I can stay inside!  But when I have to go out in it, I don’t like it at all.  I don’t like to haul groceries from the store to the car in the rain, and then haul them from the car to the house.  Around 7pm it turned into a severe thunderstorm, which really upset the dogs a lot.  And we did lose power momentarily once, which was also a drag because I was trying to read my emails and the computer shut down.  The computer takes a long time to boot back up once it has shut down, so I was annoyed about that.  I’m glad that those severe storms are few and far between!
