Home Show

by Mary Anne

One of the things that I always look forward to this time of year is all of the Home and Garden Shows that pop up everywhere. I really enjoy going to them, and walking up and down the aisles of all of the vendors, checking out the newest and greatest products on the market.

One thing that surprised me about last weekend’s show was a new vendor that I hadn’t seen before. He just started a new business selling mailboxes. He had a few hand painted mailboxes on display, along with some that he claimed were snow-plow proof, and vandalism proof. Along with that he had a photo display of his large selection of commercial mailboxes, from the kind of apartment mailboxes that are kept inside the apartment building, to the community mailboxes that are kept outside.

You never know what kind of things you’ll find at a Home Show!

Increased Risk of Nuclear Catastrophy

by Mary Anne

This morning’s news brought even worse news about the tragedies in Japan. Not only have those poor people suffered from the extensive damages of a 9.0 earthquake, one of the strongest in history, but they have lost entire towns to the destructive powers of the tsunami that immediately followed the quake. But those events have caused horrific, unanticipated damage to several of the nuclear power plants. The nuclear reactors are close to a catastrophic meltdown, which would release a lot of radioactive particles into our atmosphere.

The Japanese government is asking some people who live close to the power plants to evacuate and they are dispensing doses of iodine to help avoid radiation poisoning.

This whole series of events is horrifying to me. I feel such tremendous sorrow and helplessness for the people of Japan.

Bringing Home Survivors

by Mary Anne

With all the trouble in Japan following the earthquake and tsunami, there must be thousands of Americans who have been living there and want to come back home to America. I can’t imagine wanting to stay there in such a stressful time unless you are involved in essential services. But they will have to be making arrangements for International Movers very quickly. I have been glued to the news and find all the reports of the damages and the hardships very upsetting.

When evacuating a country in crisis, you don’t have the luxury of time to get estimates and negotiate with several companies that specialize in International Moving. In fact, I imagine time is very precious and getting packed along with trying to find food and transportation is a huge challenge.

I can’t imagine ever being in the position of having to evacuate my home. The stress of packing just what I can carry and having to make quick decisions about what to take and what I should leave would be very hard for me. I have only moved a few times in my life, and always had several weeks to pack and handle the move. But with the prospect of making a quick escape and dealing with Overseas Moving would be completely overwhelming. I hope everyone who wants to come home is able to find a way to get themselves and their belongings back to the U.S.A.

Job Search

by Mary Anne

A cousin of mine has had a baby and just mentioned that she hopes to get a job and go to work soon. The baby is 2 months old and seems to be healthy, so things might work out well for them if she can find a good day care provider.

I would not be happy leaving a two month old in day care. I would much rather stay home during the first two years and make sure that a baby gets all the attention and care possible from a mother who loves her. But sometimes we do not have the choice.

She has been looking on Craigslist for anything listed in her town, but there is not much for young, unskilled workers in that area. I hope she will be able to get an entry level job with a small company who will be understanding and supportive of her trying to raise a family and support them.

Should have bought more

by Mary Anne

A few months ago my son and I were at the local Goodwill store and we saw some brand spanking new laptop bags for sale for only $15!  Well, we’re not the type(s) to pass up such great bargains, so we each bought a laptop bag for ourselves, even though I really didn’t think that we’d really use them.  Boy was I surprised!

Since then, I’ve gone back to that same store a couple of times, wanting to buy another laptop bag or two.  My hubby needs one, as does my sister.  In fact my hubby liked mine so much that he took mine, claiming it as his own!  I wish I’d bought them when I saw them, because they are sold out of them now, and they’ll probably never have any more.  Chances of us every finding something like that at such a reasonable price are pretty slim, too!
