Maple syrup shortage?

by Mary Anne

I remember reading last year that there is a maple syrup shortage from Canada that is effecting the price of food.  I did not realize that Canada makes 80% of the world’s maple syrup!  Many consumers have been switching to maple syrup as a sweetener in their baking products so the demand for maple syrup has been increasing.  Canada had a mild spring this year, which lowered their maple syrup production.  New England, however, had a banner year and had lots of maple syrup.

As I was reading this story I found myself wondering why it took so long for this story about Canada having a mild spring (effecting the maple syrup supply) to enter the news media – their spring was six months ago for crying out loud!

And I was surprised to learn that so much syrup came from Canada because when I buy maple syrup at the store it always says it was from a New England state!

I wonder how the supply is this year!

Slang

by Mary Anne

My older sister and I like to tease each other from time to time.  Recently I sent her an email and used the slang word “y’all” in it.  In her reply, she told me I had spelled it wrong, where she lives they spell it “ya’ll.”  I replied back that when I was in grade school my English teacher told us that it was a slang word that only ignorant people used, (and then she went on a tirade about the word “ain’t”) and it was spelled “y’all” which is why I spell it that way!

Well, ignorant or not, it is a speech pattern that folks in the southern parts of the USA use frequently.  Although I moved to New England and lived there for 29 years (Ayuh, I’ll go pahk the cah and then we can go to the hossback riding pahty!) I never COULD stop saying y’all!  I got teased a lot for that!  I guess you can take this girl out of the south, but you can’t take the south of of this girl!

Well, I just went to dictionary.com and THEY said it is correctly spelled “y’all”

So, nah nah nah nah nah big sis! (tee hee!)

Shark steamer cleaner

by Mary Anne

I like it – it works well. I saw it advertised on television a few months ago and I ordered it. That’s unusual for me; I don’t usually buy things I see advertised on television! It was pricey, but it really does clean the floor very well. I have put away my regular mop and don’t plan to use that again!

Time for more regulation

by Mary Anne

Over the past thirty years, the government has made huge efforts to de-regulate everything that they could possibly de-regulate.  They de-regulated the airline industry, transportation, and the telephone company.  They thought that by doing this it would increase growth and be good for business.

Well, I have not seen any positive results from deregulating anything, and I think it is time for the government to reconsider it’s stance on regulation and deregulation.  The consumers need more protection from the evil people who sell us tainted foods, and need more protection from price-gouging.  Time to start reining in the big corporations that make obscene profits at our expense!

Penny pinching

by Mary Anne

With the economy the way it is today, I want to make absolutely sure that I am getting the best value for my hard earned dollar when I have to spend it.  This applies to every aspect of my daily life, from groceries, to clothes and shoes, laundry supplies, to home improvement, and even to work on my car.  That means that I am spending the extra time to research the credentials of everyone and everything that I possibly can.  Was it Ben Franklin who said “A penny saved is a penny earned”?  Well, I’m not earning enough pennies, that is for sure, so I need to save all those I can get my hands on!
