Training my little white doggie

by Mary Anne

In an earlier post, you might have seen two pictures of my little white doggie, PITA.  He came to live with us a year ago.  He was a stray, wandered into our yard on the coldest day of the year.  He was so small; I thought he was a puppy.  I took pity on the little guy and decided to let him in the house so I could call his owners to come get him.  Long story short, he had no identification on him.  I called all the neighbors, the local animal shelters, the area vets, the police, all the local breeders, and the newspapers.  No one ever claimed him, and so he became a member of our family.

When he came to us, he was not housebroken or obedience trained in any way.  That’s one reason I thought he was a puppy.  Turns out that he was NOT a puppy, he had all his adult teeth!  But, apparently he was kenneled outdoors with other dogs, and never trained.  We found out that he was deaf and partially blind!

That made training the little guy very challenging, since he can’t hear, and can barely see!

So far, we have made great progress in the housebreaking department, and have trained him with hand signals (and treats!) to walk with a leash, come, sit, shake hands (paws) and lie down.  We are working on the fetch, but he only will do it as long as he is interested in playing tug of war with us when he brings the toy back to us.  I’d like to train him to do more tricks, but he is resisting the roll over training.

Shoes that fit

by Mary Anne

I recently discovered that I have been wearing the wrong size shoes all of my life.  No wonder my feet always hurt!

You may wonder why I’ve always worn the wrong size shoes.  Well, mainly because the local shoe stores don’t sell the size shoe that I need, and the salespeople basically have always told me “that’s the best fit you’re going to get” and I believed them.

Years ago I went to buy winter boots at LL Bean in Freeport Maine, and the salesperson there was having trouble fitting me with boots that fit.  Eventually she told me that the problem was that I have the feet of a pre-teen boy, and she sold me a pair of boy’s boots that fit me just fine.   My feet are small, but they are extra-extra wide!  The boots weren’t pretty, but they fit me just fine and lasted many years.  In fact, as my sons grew up, they eventually wore them for a winter season or two!

Good grief, I’m taking a long time to get to the point here!  I’ve been job hunting and wanted to try to find nice looking comfortable shoes (which I did not have.)  A friend of mine lent me a catalog dedicated to comfortable clothes and shoes.  Looking through that catalog, I found a pair of shoes that looked like I would like to buy, but they did not sell my size.  So I went on the Internet and tried to find that style of shoe in my size.  Through that search I found zappos.com, an Internet store that sells a lot of shoes in a lot of sizes, and they pay for shipping BOTH WAYS.  They were a little bit pricey on the shoes themselves, but after ordering (and returning) about ten pairs of shoes, I finally found some shoes that FIT and are COMFORTABLE that look like women’s shoes!  YAY!  I will buy throught them again in the future!

Memories that warm the heart, soul, and body too!

web-pitaonottoman.jpgweb-pita-pig-face.jpgWe have a little dog that became a member of our family last year that keeps us feeling loved every minute he is awake.  My youngest son is away at college, and we miss him a lot.  I’m thinking about sending him a photo blanket with a picture of our dog for him to put on his dorm bed, to help keep him feeling “warm and fuzzy and loved” all the time.  Our dog’s pictures are in the right hand corner of this post.

I’ve seen photo blankets in various places, pet stores, craft shows, and now I’ve found a website that sells them. The website also sells products that have photos on other items, photo throw pillows, photo shower curtains, photo pillow cases, and photo duvet covers.  The site is easy to use, and they offer a discount if you order two of the same thing (one for him, one for me!)  I’ve never seen the photo shower curtains anywhere else before.  They say they can add custom lettering, too, it is 100% customized!

A custom comforter with a comical picture of our little doggie would surely bring a smile to his face every time he sees it!  I think this would be a unique gift that he would treasure forever!

A lot of snow in New England

by Mary Anne

My hubby went to New England last weekend to visit his mother.  They have had an unusual amount of snow this winter.  This is a picture of his mother’s house that he took while he was visiting with her.  I’m sure glad we don’t live up there anymore!

We need another garage! (or two or three!)

by Mary Anne

When we first looked at this house that we just recently moved into, I thought that the little storage shed in the back yard and the two car garage would be adequate to store our cars and yard machines.  Little did I know that my hubby had planned to bring about eight times more yard equipment than anyone could possibly ever really need!

But, my hubby loves BIG garden equipment, and lots of it.   And the two car garage that I thought would house my car now has his motorcycle and his “show truck” in it, so there is no room for either of our two cars or our ”work” truck.  So, we need another garage.  No, we need several more garages!
